Write One Qualification Script for Your Reps and Your AI Agent

The questions that decide if a lead is worth a human conversation — and how to use the same script on calls, whether a person or an AI agent dials.

Key takeaways

  • Qualification is a fixed set of questions plus a rule for the next step.
  • Use the same script for reps and for an AI calling agent so results are comparable.
  • Four or five questions are enough if each one changes what you do next.
  • Define “qualified” in one sentence before you automate the first call.

Qualification is a short list of questions, asked the same way every time, with a clear rule for what happens next. If each rep invents their own version, your pipeline stages mean different things to different people. If an AI calling agent uses a different list again, you cannot compare the two.

Keep the script to questions that change the next step

A qualification call is not a tour of your product. It should answer whether this person can buy, whether they want what you sell, and whether you should spend a longer meeting on them. Four or five questions are enough for most teams.

  • What are they trying to do, in their words?
  • When do they need it — this week, this month, or “just looking”?
  • Who else has to agree?
  • Have they used a tool or a competitor for this already?
  • What is the best number and time for a proper conversation?

Write the outcomes, not just the questions

Each answer should map to a stage or a task. “Needs it this month and can decide” becomes a booked meeting. “Just looking, no date” becomes a lighter follow-up, not a slot on your senior rep’s calendar. “Wrong product” becomes closed, with the reason stored on the lead.

An AI calling agent can ask this same list, record the answers, and book the next step. Your reps then start from the answers instead of repeating the first five minutes. The script has to be specific enough that both the agent and a new hire can follow it without improvising the definition of “qualified”.

Review ten calls, then edit the script

After the first week, read or listen to ten outcomes. Cut any question nobody uses. Add the question reps keep asking off-script. A short script that matches how you actually sell beats a long one nobody follows.

Questions about this topic

  • Long enough to decide the next step, usually four or five questions. If a question does not change the stage or the task, drop it.
